Ashurst stays on top with Market Maker

Leading international law firm Ashurst has a dedicated high yield team in London. The team prides itself on being able to offer client-led solutions across the range of funding packages.

Understanding the client’s needs, as well as the current market conditions across the range of Debt Capital Market and leveraged finance markets, is key. To enable it to stay on top of the market, the firm uses Debt Explained data.

As part of a banking team, Ashurst’s high yield specialists are working across a variety of sectors, geographies and deal structures. Natalia Sokolova, Counsel, explained that the team are expected to be able to develop bespoke financing solutions as part of a complex funding package.

The European high yield bond market has always been fast-paced and dynamic. It is also precedent-led. Being able to stay on top of market trends and individual deal terms is key to maintaining their high level of service for their clients.

Debt Explained’s Market Maker database has been a staple for the team for several years.  Natalia explains that the team log in to Market Maker on a daily basis and may access it on numerous occasions during the day. It may be that a particular term or deal is discussed and they want to refresh their memory or check a detail.

Market Maker is an intuitive database to use, explained Natalia. Once logged in, the initial screen provides a good high level of data on the most recent deals. She also finds the index easy to use with either a word search option or easy to navigate sections that contain more detailed data points.

The team use the comparison tool regularly. It allows them to bring in a small number of deals and view provisions side by side. The team use this to proactively understand not just their clients – but also their peers. The real strength of the Market Maker is its granularity, explains Natalia. “If I ever come across a term that isn’t used very often, I go straight to Market Maker. I know that I can search across all sectors and countries to find other uses of the term. It may be that the term is being used in a number of ways and I can quickly identify each instance. Having that information gives me a great deal of confidence when talking to my clients.”

Working as part of a busy banking team that serves clients across the world, they have to be able to work fast and work smart.

“Without Market Maker, the alternative would be a lot of manual searching through individual OMs. Having Market Maker means that we can work quickly and efficiently to get the best result for our clients,” explained Natalia.
